Norway’s King Haakon narrows the royal household’s official membership
King Haakon has narrowed the official core of Norway’s royal household in a revised royal-family structure.
The inner circle now consists of Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
Queen Sonja is listed among the wider royal family, alongside Prince Sverre Magnus and Princess Märtha Louise.
In Norway, Sonja will be addressed as “Queen Sonja” rather than “Your Majesty.”
The change reflects Haakon’s policy of limiting the use of royal titles to members of the royal household.
The change does not apply to appearances abroad, where English-language custom allows Sonja to continue being addressed as “Your Majesty.”
