More than 70 economists form Spanish network to promote shared prosperity
More than 70 progressive economists in Spain have formed a network called Accelerating Shared Prosperity, which is being presented in Madrid.
The network is led by economist Mònica Martínez-Bravo and brings together people working independently of their institutions.
Its goal is to use scientific evidence to improve public policy and the material wellbeing of working people.
The economists say that economic growth does not always benefit everyone equally, and that gains in wealthy countries have increasingly gone to people at the top.
They also point to pressure on middle-class incomes and a growing struggle with affordability.
The network has created a scientific council that includes Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu, Dani Rodrik and Gabriel Zucman.
Ministers Pablo Bustinduy and Carlos Cuerpo are expected to take part in the launch.
