Canadian cybersecurity executive arrested in federal extortion case

Edward Dubrovsky, a 54-year-old Canadian cybersecurity executive, was arrested in Pennsylvania on Thursday.

Federal prosecutors have charged him with conspiring to extort money through threats involving confidential information and interstate commerce.

Dubrovsky founded CYPFER, a company that helps organizations negotiate with ransomware operators.

The case appears to be connected to an attack by the ShinyHunters group that exposed personal data about thousands of FBI employees, but the details remain sealed and the FBI has not publicly named Dubrovsky.

The FBI says the breach stemmed from a third-party platform where a contractor had not installed a security patch.

Several people have been detained in connection with the wider investigation.

Dubrovsky has been moved to the Eastern District of Texas, where he will remain in custody until a detention hearing is scheduled.
