Japan voices concern over US sanctions targeting the ICC

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara expressed concern on October 11 about US sanctions targeting the International Criminal Court, or ICC.

The ICC is an international court, and the measures were taken by the Trump administration.

Kihara said the sanctions do not align with Japan’s position and that Japan consistently prioritizes the rule of law internationally.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi discussed the ICC with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio by phone on October 10.

Kihara said Motegi conveyed Japan’s position during the call.

He also said the two countries had agreed to keep communicating closely about the issue.
