At least 8 million people in Italy have mental health problems
At least 8 million people in Italy are estimated to have mental health problems, from anxiety and depression to eating and psychiatric disorders.
The estimate has risen in recent years, especially among young people, and digital technology may play a role.
Public services treated 845,516 adults in 2024, far fewer than the number who may need help.
Many people who seek care do not get it through public services or have to pay for it themselves.
Of 1,715 planned community health centres, 781 had at least one service active, and 334 offered mental health support.
Only 66 met the standards to be considered fully operational.
On World Mental Health Day, the World Health Organization called for community-based services that respect human rights, while EU lawmakers backed recommendations on preventing work-related psychosocial risks.
The figures highlight a gap between demand and available care, but the sources do not set out a timetable for changes.

The Italian Society of Psychiatry says care should better connect Community Houses with mental health centres, primary care, family counselling services and social services.
A Youtrend and UNICEF Italy survey found that 47% of parents had considered seeking professional help for emotions related to parenthood but had not done so.
