South Korea says U.S. intelligence sharing remains broad despite some restrictions

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said the United States has not limited intelligence sharing with Seoul to information about North Korean missiles.

It said the two countries still cooperate on North Korea’s conventional military capabilities, developments and international relations, as well as cybersecurity and counterintelligence.

The agency acknowledged that some intelligence-sharing restrictions are in place, but said the total amount of U.S. intelligence provided has not declined.

Concerns about friction grew after South Korea’s unification minister disclosed a North Korean uranium enrichment site in March.

The agency also said it was left out of a June meeting between the United States and Japan on North Korean cyberthreats.

A senior U.S. official said Washington expects Seoul to uphold the standards of their longstanding alliance.

The agency says intelligence cooperation remains reciprocal and mutually beneficial, but did not describe any next steps.
