Suspected cholera cases triple in Yemen amid renewed fighting
The World Health Organization says suspected cholera cases in Yemen tripled in three weeks, reaching 647 in the week ending October 3.
Yemen has recorded 8,034 suspected cases and 27 deaths this year, with a quarter of cases reported in the past four weeks.
Renewed fighting has forced more than 200,000 people from their homes, and many have sought refuge in camps with poor sanitation.
Cholera spreads through contaminated food or water and can become deadly without treatment.
Five southwestern governorates account for 92 percent of reported cases, while the disease has also reached remote camps in eastern Hadramout.
The WHO has secured only $3.78 million of the $31 million needed for a 90-day emergency response.
The agency says urgent funding and access to safe water, vaccination and health services are needed to limit the spread.
