BSW calls for German energy deal with Russia after US diesel agreement
The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party is calling for Germany to resume buying energy from Russia after US President Donald Trump announced a diesel agreement with Moscow.
Trump said more than 300,000 tonnes of Russian diesel would initially go to the United States and the global market, with US sanctions temporarily eased.
BSW says Germany should resume regular oil and gas imports as well as seek a diesel deal, arguing that sanctions have hurt the country.
The BSW and the AfD plan to bring the demand to a vote in the state parliament in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt.
Together, the two parties have a majority there, but the state parliament cannot decide to restart Russian energy imports.
German foreign policy is handled by the federal government, while sanctions against Russia are set at European Union level.
