CDU postpones Herbert Reul’s election nomination after hip fracture

Herbert Reul is North Rhine-Westphalia’s interior minister and a CDU politician.

He broke his hip in a fall at a police headquarters in Wuppertal and had surgery that evening.

The CDU had planned to nominate him on Thursday as its direct candidate in Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis II.

The party postponed the meeting after consulting Reul.

He is currently the only applicant for the nomination and won 51.1% of the constituency’s first-choice votes in the 2022 state election.

North Rhine-Westphalia is due to elect a new state parliament in about six months.

The party says nominations do not need to be submitted until January 2027 and aims to hold the meeting before Christmas.
