CDU leaders meet in Berlin to address party’s election setbacks

Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is meeting in Berlin to respond to a series of election setbacks.

The party lost heavily in three state elections in September, and polling puts it below 20%, down from 28.5% in the 2025 national election.

Chancellor and CDU leader Friedrich Merz is also under pressure.

Secretary-General Franziska Hoppermann said the meeting would begin a longer process, not produce an instant solution.

Leaders are discussing how to regain trust and address concerns such as living costs, energy prices, security, migration and jobs.

They also face questions about the party’s policy direction and its approach to the far-right AfD and the Left party.

The election disputes are adding strain to the national coalition between the CDU and the Social Democrats.

Merz and Hoppermann are due to present the meeting’s results on Monday afternoon.
