Moscow court rejects house arrest for investigator in missing-jewelry case

A court in Moscow has rejected a request to place investigator Nikita Tulupov under house arrest.

He is accused of abusing his authority in a case involving jewelry seized from blogger Valeria Chekalina, known as Lerchek.

The missing items were a Rolex watch and a Bulgari bracelet, reported to be worth 14.4 million rubles in total.

They disappeared from a work safe used by the investigator.

The Russian Interior Ministry said the items had not been designated as evidence and were stored improperly.

Tulupov denies the accusation.

The case over the missing jewelry was opened on October 9.

Chekalina was given a suspended prison sentence and a fine in a separate case over illegal currency transactions, and her lawyers have appealed.
