Pope Leo to have surgery to remove an early-detected lung nodule

Pope Leo XIV, the 71-year-old head of the Catholic Church, says doctors found a small nodule on his lung during a recent medical check in Rome.

He said it was found early and is well localised.

Doctors advised surgery to remove it, and the operation is scheduled for the first days of this week.

The Vatican expects his recovery to take about a week.

The Vatican has not said whether the nodule is cancerous.

Leo became pope in 2025 and has no previously known health problems.

He has an 11-day trip planned to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17, but it is not clear whether the surgery will affect that plan.
