Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force failed to reuse ¥58 million in helicopter parts
Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force replaces older UH-60J rescue helicopters and reuses parts that can also fit newer aircraft.
An audit examined parts on eight older helicopters during fiscal years 2021 to 2025.
It found that three types of parts, including generators, worth about ¥58 million in total, were not removed even though they could have been reused.
For some parts, the force had earlier decided removal was unnecessary, but later demand for them emerged.
Auditors said the force did not reassess whether those parts should be recovered, allowing useful equipment to go unused.
Reusing parts can help reduce procurement costs.
The force has revised its guidance, and Japan’s Defense Ministry said it would inform relevant departments and ensure parts are recovered appropriately.
