World grape and wine congress opens in China for first time in Asia

The 47th World Grape and Wine Congress opened on October 12 in Yinchuan, in China’s Ningxia region.

It is the first time the International Organisation of Vine and Wine has held the event in Asia, and the first time China has hosted it.

The five-day gathering brings together representatives from 51 member countries and more than 800 guests.

Ningxia is home to the Helan Mountain East Foothills wine region, a major wine-producing area in China.

The region has built a large grape-growing base and a wine industry linked with tourism.

Participants are discussing industry research and issues including climate change, changing consumer habits, innovation and sustainability.

Ningxia also released a proposal calling for cooperation on environmental practices, standards, product quality and shared markets.

Experts will discuss more than 420 research findings during the congress.
