Military prosecutor seeking Bolsonaro's expulsion receives medal
Military prosecutor Clauro Roberto de Bortolli received a military medal, according to a notice published in Brazil’s official gazette on Friday, October 9.
Bortolli leads the Military Public Prosecutor’s Office and filed a case asking the Superior Military Court to strip Jair Bolsonaro and four other officers of their ranks.
The group includes former president Bolsonaro, a reserve captain, and former Navy commander Almir Garnier and three Army generals.
They are serving prison terms of 19 to 27 years after convictions by Brazil’s Supreme Court in September 2025 for crimes including attempting a coup.
The prosecutors argue that Bolsonaro disregarded military ethics and violated duties including respect for civilian authorities, while Brazil’s Constitution provides for loss of rank after a final prison sentence of more than two years.
The military court has not set a date for a decision, and it rejected a defense request in June to remove one of its judges from the case.
