Three farm groups plan Madrid tractor protest on 28 October
Three Spanish farm organizations—Asaja, COAG and Unión de Uniones—plan to stage a tractor protest in Madrid on 28 October.
They say rising production costs, especially agricultural diesel and fertilizer, are making it harder for farmers and livestock producers to cover their expenses.
The groups want the government to take urgent action, including a lasting plan to reduce costs and fairer prices for farm products.
They also call for strong funding for the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy and enforcement of Spain’s food-chain law.
They object to imports that they say do not face the same requirements as European products, and want less administrative paperwork.
The government has extended a 20-cent-per-litre fuel subsidy through the end of the year, but the groups say temporary aid is not enough.
UPA will not take part in the protest, while the three groups plan to gather at the Agriculture Ministry.
Asaja, COAG and Unión de Uniones have called a tractor protest in Madrid for 28 October over rising production costs.
The protest will end at the Ministry of Agriculture and will focus especially on the rising price of agricultural diesel.
The groups say farmers and livestock producers are struggling to cover costs and want urgent measures, fair prices and a stronger Common Agricultural Policy.
They also oppose what they call unfair competition from imports and call for less bureaucracy.
UPA will not join the protest and has postponed its participation until after 29 November, according to 20minutos.

Agriculture Minister Luis Planas met agricultural representatives and committed to measures to address rising prices, according to El Mundo.
The government extended the existing 20-cent-per-litre fuel aid until the end of the year, rather than approving the structural package sought by the groups, El Mundo reported.
