MGM+ Reimagines Treasure Island as a Pirate Adventure

MGM+ has made a six-part adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

The story follows Jim Hawkins, a teenager living with his widowed mother, Bess, as they struggle to make a living at their tavern.

Their prospects change when a shipwrecked pirate, Billy Bones, arrives with a map to buried treasure.

Jim and Bess travel to the Caribbean with a wealthy merchant, but Long John Silver joins them because he wants the map.

The series puts themes of oppression and rebellion at the center and has the Haitian Revolution unfolding in the background.

David Oyelowo plays Silver, and Hayley Atwell plays Bess.

The adaptation has detailed settings and a strong cast, but its story is described as flat and repetitive.

The series is set to air on MGM+ on October 11.
