Turkish steel exporters seek new business in the Baltic states
Turkish steel exporters are looking for more business in Latvia and Lithuania, two Baltic states in the European Union.
The effort comes as the EU has reduced import quotas and raised duties on steel brought in above those limits.
The EU has capped steel imports at 18 million tonnes and allocated 3.1 million to 3.2 million tonnes to Turkey.
Eighteen Turkish companies met steel importers and buyers during a trade visit supported by Turkey’s trade ministry.
Turkish industry representatives say the meetings could lead to $30 million to $40 million in business.
They believe exports could grow from about 160,000 tonnes to 320,000 tonnes in Lithuania, and from about 20,000 tonnes to 50,000 tonnes in Latvia.
The opportunity is linked to changes in supply since Russia’s war with Ukraine reduced steel supplies from Russia and Ukraine.
Exporters also say higher scrap costs and tight margins make it difficult to grow profitably.
