Centre says no Tamil Nadu aid proposal for Cauvery‑Vaigai‑Gundar link
The Indian government said that the state of Tamil Nadu has not asked for money to help build a big water project that would move water from the Cauvery River to other areas.
The project was planned a long time ago and a report was made in 2020.
It would move a lot of water from a place called Kattalai Barrage to help farmers and people in several districts that often have little water.
The plan would also give water for homes and factories.
The government said it has not studied how this would affect underground water in some districts yet.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti says no Tamil Nadu proposal for financial assistance to the Cauvery‑Vaigai‑Gundar Link Project is under consideration.
The project’s detailed project report (DPR) was completed and circulated by the National Water Development Agency in 2020.
The DPR proposes diverting about 2,252 million cubic metres of water from the Kattalai Barrage on the Cauvery River to supply 218 million cubic metres for domestic and industrial use in drought‑prone districts.
The project would cover Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Thoothukudi districts in Tamil Nadu.
The Central Ground Water Board has not carried out a project‑specific study on groundwater recharge impacts in Theni, Virudhunagar and Ramanathapuram.
