SpiceJet's Domestic Market Share Falls to Decade Low in July
SpiceJet carried a much smaller share of India’s domestic passengers in July.
Its share dropped to 1.6%, the lowest level mentioned in more than a decade.
The airline has far fewer working airplanes than it had in earlier years.
Some planes left after temporary lease agreements ended, while others were being repaired.
SpiceJet also faces high fuel and operating costs.
The airline is trying to add planes and return aircraft from maintenance.
It added three Airbus A320 aircraft on a damp lease in July.
However, large losses and disputes with aircraft lessors make rebuilding its operations difficult.
IndiGo and the Air India Group continue to dominate India’s domestic aviation market.
SpiceJet’s domestic market share fell to 1.6% in July, down from 1.9% in June and 2.5% in May.
The airline’s share has declined more than 92% from its 20.9% peak in July 2014.
SpiceJet is operating around 20 aircraft, compared with 58 in FY14 and 100 in 2019.
The carrier’s capacity has been constrained by wet-lease exits, aircraft maintenance and financial difficulties.
