Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Begins Across Western Rajasthan Amid Widespread Rain
India's rainy-season winds have started moving away from western Rajasthan.
This is the usual beginning of the monsoon's yearly retreat.
The withdrawal line currently passes through several places in Rajasthan.
The monsoon will gradually retreat from more parts of India.
Rain is still expected in many eastern, central, southern and northeastern areas.
Some places may receive very heavy rain.
Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu recorded 12 to 20 centimetres of rain in isolated areas.
Overall rainfall this monsoon has been below the normal amount so far.
The India Meteorological Department said the southwest monsoon began withdrawing from parts of northwest India on 20 September.
The withdrawal line passed through Ramgarh, Mohangarh, Phalodi and Khajuwala in western Rajasthan and adjoining areas.
The retreat is expected to progress gradually toward northwest and central India, depending on rainfall and atmospheric conditions.
The IMD forecast widespread rainfall across parts of eastern, central, southern and northeastern India during the coming week.
Cumulative monsoon rainfall was 695.6 mm from 1 June to 19 September, 15% below the normal 817.2 mm.
