Kerala High Court denies relief to mother-in-law over dowry harassment
‘Stinging words’ over dowry: Kerala High Court denies relief to woman’s mother-in-law · indianexpress.com

An Indian law makes it illegal for a family to demand extra money or gifts after a wedding, which is called dowry harassment.

In this story, a woman said her husband's family treated her badly because the gold jewelry she brought when she married was not enough.

She said her mother-in-law said mean, hurtful things to her.

She also said her brother-in-law slapped her and scared her one day in January 2020.

The mother-in-law and brother-in-law asked the Kerala High Court to stop the case against them.

The court said the mother-in-law must still go to trial because the accusations against her were specific and serious.

But the court dropped the case against the brother-in-law because the accusations against him were too vague.

The judge, Justice Jobin Sebastian, said it is the trial court's job to hear all the evidence and decide who is telling the truth.

The decision was made on August 7.
