Indian-Origin Founders Create $560 Billion Global Technology Empire
A new study looked at big private technology companies connected to founders who grew up in India.
It found that these companies are worth about $560 billion outside India under the study’s special calculation.
This does not mean the founders personally have $560 billion.
Most of the companies are based in the United States.
Some were started entirely by India-raised founders, while others had international founding teams.
Many founders studied technical subjects, including at Indian Institutes of Technology campuses.
Most were at least 30 years old when they started their companies.
India also has many large startups of its own, worth about $349 billion under the same calculation.
A Prosus and Dealroom index attributes about $560 billion in value outside India to companies founded by people who grew up in India.
The dataset covers 205 current and former unicorns, including 187 based in the United States.
About 70 companies were founded entirely by India-raised founders, while 135 had mixed founding teams.
Indian Institutes of Technology campuses, especially IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras, appear frequently in founder education records.
The index also identifies 101 India-based unicorns worth about $349 billion on a founder-attributed basis, bringing the combined figure near $910 billion.
