The Enforcement Directorate, or ED, searched about 10 places connected to Azam Khan and his university trust.

The searches happened on August 19 in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

Investigators are checking whether money from government contracts was improperly moved through private contractors.

Officials say some of that money may have gone to the trust and university as donations or construction payments.

The ED is looking at financial records, other documents and digital evidence.

The case is being investigated under India’s money-laundering law.

A separate dispute concerns a proposal to demolish 38 of the university’s 40 buildings, but that action was temporarily stopped.

A state minister said the raids could reveal corruption, while Congress and other opposition parties called them harassment or political vendetta.
