Maharashtra Road Safety Council Meets After Three-Year Gap
Maharashtra has a group called the State Road Safety Council that works on preventing road accidents.
The group met after being inactive for more than three years.
Its previous meeting was held on April 3, 2023.
Since then, the state recorded more than 117,000 road accidents.
More than 50,000 people died in those crashes.
Many others suffered serious or minor injuries.
The transport minister asked several government departments to work together.
The council is supposed to meet at least twice every year.
Maharashtra’s State Road Safety Council met after a 1,267-day gap since its previous meeting on April 3, 2023.
The state recorded 117,070 road accidents and 50,488 deaths between the previous meeting and June 2026.
The Transport Department reported 73,423 serious injuries and 27,198 minor injuries during the same period.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik directed police, public works and health officials to coordinate on road safety.
The council is required to meet at least twice a year but has met infrequently since 2019.
