Standalone Health Insurers Gain Market Share as General Insurers Falter
Companies in India that only sell health insurance are getting more customers.
These are called standalone health insurers.
At the same time, companies that sell many types of insurance, like car and fire insurance, are losing a little bit of ground.
In the first four months ending in July 2026, health-only insurers collected a bigger share of all the money paid for non-life insurance.
Their share went up from 11.72 out of every 100 rupees to 14.10.
The money health-only insurers collected grew by about 32 percent.
The bigger, all-purpose insurance companies only grew by about 8 percent.
People want health insurance more than before, partly because the government stopped charging a special tax on it.
Even though the big insurers lost market share, they still collected more money than in the previous year.
So overall, health insurance is becoming a more important part of India's insurance business.
Standalone health insurers' share of India's non-life insurance premium rose to 14.10% from 11.72% in the four months ended July 2026.
General insurers' market share declined to 85.34% from 86.43%, a fall of 1.09 percentage points.
Standalone health insurers' cumulative premiums grew 31.74% to Rs 16,827 crore, far outpacing general insurers' 8.09% growth to Rs 101,812 crore.
New India Assurance remained the largest general insurer, though its market share slipped to 14.27% from 15.08%.
Star Health stayed the largest standalone health insurer with a 5.11% share, while Aditya Birla Health Insurance posted the strongest premium growth at 45.06%.
