Monsoon Halts Classes at 230 Building-Less Schools in Madhya Pradesh

Many children in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh cannot go to school when it rains a lot.

That is because some of their school buildings are missing or broken.

The government counted 230 schools in the state that have no building at all.

In some places, teachers make temporary classrooms, like in a community hall or a temple.

But even those temporary classrooms stop working when heavy monsoon rain falls.

In one village called Batki, kids walk about two kilometers to another village to find a classroom.

In another school in Brijpur, rainwater gets inside the old building, so it is unsafe and the door has been locked.

One school in Dhamani holds classes in a temple after part of its roof fell down in 2021.

The state government has approved fixing or building many schools, but children are still waiting for safe places to study.
