Every ten years, India counts all its people.

This event is called a census, and the next one is Census 2027.

In the first part of the census, workers visit homes to ask about houses and the things families own.

That part is already finished in 31 states and union territories.

The government has given places about ₹4,102 crore to pay workers and buy the needed technology.

The second part will ask about families, jobs, and other details.

For the very first time since India became independent, it will also count different castes.

Ladakh, a cold mountain region, will start this counting first, along with snowy parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

People there can fill in their details online from August 17 to 31, 2026, and workers will visit homes from September 1 to 30, 2026.

The whole census is expected to cost about ₹11,718 crore.

“After that, we will have population enumeration (PE) from September 1 to 30 for Ladakh as well as J&K. It will happen along with few snow-bound areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. They will proceed simultaneously and partially but technically, Ladakh will be the first state or UT in the country where this exercise will be 100% complete because Ladakh is all snow-bound.”
