Andhra Pradesh Uses GST Data for Real-Time Economic Tracking
Andhra Pradesh is building a system to measure its economy more quickly.
It uses information from GST tax filings and e-way bills that track goods moving around the state.
The system estimates how much different industries produce.
Manufacturing activity grew 19.6% compared with the previous year up to July.
Its manufacturing estimate was close to the Planning Department’s estimate.
The system also estimates activity in construction, trade, hotels, restaurants, real estate, communication and broadcasting.
Officials can view economic activity by district, mandal and individual business.
The state has identified about 20.08 lakh MSMEs, including businesses outside the GST system.
Monthly GST filings may eventually help officials track economic changes each month and find inactive businesses that may need help.
