Kanpur Widow Alleges ₹50 Lakh Jewellery Missing From SBI Locker
An elderly lady in the Indian city of Kanpur had a special metal box, called a locker, inside a bank, where she kept her family's jewellery.
She rented that locker back in 2003.
After her husband passed away, she moved to Lucknow and did not visit the bank for many years.
During that time, her bank merged with a bigger bank called the State Bank of India.
Even though she was not using the locker, the bank kept taking locker fees from her account.
When she finally returned to open the locker, she found all her jewellery, worth about 50 lakh rupees, was missing.
The lady says the bank workers first told her that her locker did not exist.
They only agreed it existed after she showed them her account papers.
She went to the police, who filed a case against the bank manager and some other workers.
The police are now checking bank records, locker documents and camera footage to find out what happened to the jewellery.
Widow Rashmi Arora filed an FIR alleging jewellery worth around ₹50 lakh disappeared from her locker at an SBI branch in Kanpur.
She opened the account at the erstwhile State Bank of Travancore branch in 2003 and was allotted locker number 23.
Arora said locker charges kept being deducted from her account after the merger with SBI, but she was initially unable to inspect the locker.
She could not open the locker on July 21 without a key; when she returned with the key on July 27, she found it completely empty.
Swaroop Nagar police registered the FIR on August 10 against the branch manager and unidentified employees and are examining records, locker documents and CCTV footage.
