Andhra Pradesh Intensifies Disease Controls After Monsoon Rains
Andhra Pradesh is taking extra steps to stop diseases after heavy rains.
Rain can leave pools of water where mosquitoes breed.
By August 30, malaria and dengue cases were higher than during the same period last year.
Health workers will spray homes, remove mosquito-breeding places and distribute mosquito nets.
They will pay special attention to tribal and forest areas.
Every Friday, people and officials will remove standing water during a programme called Dry Day.
Officials will also test people with fevers and provide early treatment.
Drinking-water sources and food-safety conditions will be checked in areas with more illnesses.
Several government departments will work together to find and control disease hotspots.
Andhra Pradesh reported 7,895 malaria cases by August 30, up 27.9% from last year.
The State recorded 1,475 dengue cases, a 4.6% increase over the corresponding period.
Officials will expand spraying, fogging, mosquito-net distribution, fever surveillance and testing in vulnerable areas.
A weekly Friday ‘Dry Day’ will target stagnant water through public participation and app-based monitoring.
Health teams will address scrub typhus, typhoid and food-borne diseases through testing, water purification and sanitation checks.
