Syrian court sentences exiled Bashar al-Assad to death

Syria is a country in the Middle East, and a court there just made a very important decision.

The court said that Bashar al-Assad, the man who used to be Syria's boss, is guilty of doing terrible things.

Those things include hurting and killing many people, even children, during a war that lasted almost 14 years.

The judge decided that Assad should get the death penalty as punishment.

Assad was not in the courtroom because he ran away to Russia after losing his power in December 2024.

He is safe in Russia for now, so the court's punishment cannot actually happen.

The war started in 2011 when people peacefully asked for changes and were met with deadly force by the government.

Hundreds of thousands of people died and millions had to leave their homes because of the fighting.

Even though the sentence cannot be carried out right now, it is a strong message that what Assad did was wrong and against the law.
