Andhra Pradesh Approves Dharavi-Style Slum Redevelopment with Velampeta as Pilot

In a city in India called Visakhapatnam, there is an old neighborhood called Velampeta where many families live in small, crowded homes.

The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to rebuild this neighborhood so the families can get nicer homes.

They plan to build a tall building with 177 new homes right where the people already live.

This way, families do not have to move far away from their friends and neighbors.

To pay for the new building, the government will not use its own money directly.

Instead, a private company will build the homes and, in return, get special rights called Transferable Development Rights.

These rights let the company build more buildings in other places later as a reward.

The company will be chosen through a contest in which builders offer to accept the smallest amount of rights.

The government also made some building rules easier, like needing less parking space, to keep the project affordable.

If this works well, the same plan will be used to improve other crowded neighborhoods in the region.
