Deep Depression Near Andhra-Odisha Coast Brings Bengal Rain
A strong weather system called a deep depression is moving toward the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
It was near Kalingapatnam on the morning of September 23.
Weather officials expected it to cross the coast on Wednesday night.
The system is likely to bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
Several districts in south Bengal were placed under orange alerts.
Kolkata and nearby districts were placed under a yellow alert for Friday.
Rain is expected to become lighter by Sunday.
Officials warned about flooding in low areas, damage to crops and unsafe conditions for fishermen.
The deep depression was about 60km southeast of Kalingapatnam at 8:30am on September 23.
It was expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam on Wednesday night.
The India Meteorological Department issued orange alerts for several south Bengal districts on Thursday and Saturday.
Kolkata and neighbouring districts received yellow alerts for Friday, while several other districts remained under orange alert.
Fishermen were advised to avoid parts of the Bay of Bengal and the Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts until September 25.
