Jitendra Singh urges private investment to boost biotech sector
A big government helper called BIRAC, which supports science and health research in India, met with its boss, Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.
The minister said more companies should join in and invest in biotechnology, the science that uses living things to make medicines and other products.
The government has created a huge fund with lots of money to help new ideas become real products.
Small companies and startups can ask for help, from 5 crore to 200 crore rupees.
The fund can pay up to half the cost of a project with loans or other money.
The first big call for ideas happened in February 2026, and almost 200 companies sent in their ideas.
So far, eight very good teams have been chosen, and they are being checked before receiving the money.
India also has more than 1,700 centres where companies do science work, and BIRAC wants to connect them to Indian labs, startups and factories.
This way, more useful products made in India can help the country grow.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh called for enhancing private sector participation and investment in India's biotechnology ecosystem during a meeting with BIRAC officials.
The meeting focused on implementing the BIRAC-RDIF, a key component of the central government's Rs 1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Fund.
BIRAC-RDIF supports projects at Technology Readiness Levels 4 to 9 with assistance from Rs 5 crore to Rs 200 crore, covering up to 50 per cent of project costs.
India received 198 applications under the fund's first National Call for Proposals launched on February 13, 2026, with eight Eligible Technology Entities selected so far.
BIRAC will integrate Life Sciences Global Capability Centres into the domestic biotechnology ecosystem; India hosts over 1,700 GCCs employing around 1.9 million professionals.
