SBI MD bats for alternative data to assess MSME creditworthiness
Banks want to lend money to small businesses, but it is hard for them to know if those businesses can pay the money back.
Right now, banks mostly look at one kind of record to understand a business.
However, many small businesses are not in that record system.
In India, only 1 out of every 9 businesses has such a record.
A top banker from State Bank of India talked about a new way to solve this problem.
He said banks could look at other clues, like how much electricity a business uses or how often people use their mobile phones.
Those clues can show whether a business is active and doing well.
He suggested that all this information should be collected in one safe place called a credit bureau.
He also said computers could one day help banks make these decisions automatically.
That idea is still very new because there is not enough old data to teach the computers yet.
SBI Managing Director Ashwini Kumar Tewari said bankers struggle to assess MSME loans using only GST data because many businesses are not GST-registered.
Only 1 crore of the total 9 crore businesses are GST-registered, leaving a large share of the MSME sector outside the formal data ecosystem.
Tewari proposed routing alternative numerical data such as power consumption, mobile phone ownership and telecom usage through credit bureaus.
He said lenders currently face costly and complex integration with multiple telecom providers and platforms to use such data.
He urged developing automated credit models using bureau data, noting such models remain at an early stage due to a lack of historical data.

“"It is a good suggestion that all the data of coordinates, which is numerical, that is power consumption, data ownership, mobile phone ownership, all of them, if that can be routed through the bureau itself, that would be eligible data."”

“Only 1 crore (of) total 9 crore are GST registered. So, everybody is trying to actually mine that section. That is also a large number. But, there are so many, which are not GST registered. And their data is not available.”
