PMK Warns Low Mettur Storage Threatens Samba Crop
The Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu does not have as much water as usual.
PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said the dam is only about half full.
He said the water may last for around 35 more days for farming.
This could make it difficult for farmers to grow the Samba rice crop.
He blamed lower water releases from Karnataka for the shortage.
He also said much of the Cauvery delta farmland could remain unused.
Anbumani asked the Tamil Nadu government to help farmers with money and farming supplies.
He proposed Rs 25,000 per acre for farmers who cannot plant and Rs 10,000 per acre for participating farmers.
He also requested reliable electricity for farms that use groundwater.
Mettur Dam’s water level has fallen to 84 feet, with storage at 46 TMC, or 49.21% of capacity.
