Young Indian Legislators Remain Few, Often Political Dynasts
India has many young people, but not many young lawmakers.
The analysis counted 384 MPs and state legislators who are 40 or younger.
Only 26 of them belong to Gen Z, which the article defines as people born from 1997 to 2012.
About 38% of all lawmakers aged 40 or younger come from political families.
This means having a parent, grandparent or other close relative in politics may help a young person enter public office.
The minimum age to contest an election is 25, so some Gen Z citizens cannot yet run.
Odisha, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have especially high proportions of young lawmakers from political families.
