Nagarjuna Sagar irrigation water withheld until end of August
Farmers who grow crops near the Krishna river are waiting for water from a big reservoir called Nagarjuna Sagar.
Every August, that reservoir usually sends water to their fields.
But this year, the reservoir is very, very low on water.
It does not have enough water to send to the farms.
A special group of people in charge of water met on August 6 to talk about it.
They decided the reservoir cannot send water until the end of August.
The group is hoping heavy rains will fill the reservoir soon.
Meanwhile, the government is checking another reservoir called Srisailam, which has been getting more water.
If the problem gets worse, they might send water from Srisailam to Nagarjuna Sagar.
The farmers have to wait and hope the water comes soon so their crops can grow.
Irrigation water will not be released from Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir until the end of August.
Reservoir water levels remain extremely low, leaving required volumes unavailable for release.
The State Level Integrated Water Planning and Management Committee decided against release at its August 6 meeting.
Water is normally released for irrigation during the first or second week of August every year.
The government is checking water availability in Srisailam and preparing special arrangements to release water from Srisailam to Sagar if the situation worsens.
