Tamil Nadu Extends Free Bus Travel Benefits for Differently-Abled Residents

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced new help for differently-abled people.

They can already travel for free on ordinary buses with one helper.

Now, the free travel will also include Express, LSS and deluxe buses.

Air-conditioned buses will not be included.

Some people whose legs are affected will receive specially designed scooters.

New homes will be created for mentally challenged people in ten districts.

Other homes will provide occupational training for differently-abled people.

More facilities will also support people with spinal-cord disabilities and differently-abled children.

Key facts

Bus coverage: Free travel with a helper will extend to Express, LSS and deluxe buses.
Exclusion: Air-conditioned buses will not be covered.
Scooters: Low-height scooters with specially designed wheels will be distributed to eligible people with affected legs and functioning hands.
Mental-health homes: Homes will be established in ten districts for 500 mentally challenged people.
Training homes: Occupational-training homes will be established in ten districts for 400 people.
Spinal-cord support: Two additional homes will be established for people whose spinal cords are affected.
Children’s support: Six primary training centres will be established for differently-abled children.
