Election Commission Expands Electoral Literacy Clubs Across India
India’s Election Commission wants students to understand how elections work.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said students will help shape the country’s future democracy.
Electoral Literacy Clubs, or ELCs, will operate in schools, colleges and universities.
These clubs will teach young people about registering to vote and taking part in elections.
They will also explain voting, vote counting and the work of election officials.
A new program called ELC 2.0 will use the ECINET digital platform.
The program is meant to run activities throughout the year across India.
Kumar also thanked Gujarat’s election officers for helping update the state’s voter lists.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar called students the torchbearers of tomorrow’s democracy.
The Election Commission is developing ELC 2.0 under the tagline “Learn Democracy. Lead Democracy”.
The initiative will use the ECINET platform and a dedicated portal to support year-round electoral education.
Electoral Literacy Clubs will teach young people about registration, voting, counting, democratic values and the Election Commission’s role.
Kumar also praised more than 500 Gujarat Booth Level Officers for their work during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
