Telangana Clears Accident Insurance Scheme for 4.21 Lakh Fishermen
Telangana is a state in India, and its government wants to help fishermen stay safe.
Fishermen work on water, which can be dangerous, so accidents can happen.
The government started an insurance program just for them, called GAIS.
Insurance is like a promise that gives money to people when something bad happens.
More than four lakh fishermen between ages 18 and 70 can join.
If a fisherman dies in an accident, their family gets 5 lakh rupees.
If a fisherman becomes unable to work because of an accident, the government also gives money to help.
The Central and state governments share the cost of this program, so fishermen don't have to pay a single rupee.
This way, fishermen's families feel safer and are taken care of even in hard times.
The Telangana government approved the Group Accident Insurance Scheme (GAIS) for 4,21,767 registered fishermen for the 2026-27 financial year.
The Centre and the state will share the insurance premium in a 60:40 ratio.
The scheme covers fishermen aged 18-70, paying 5 lakh rupees for accidental death or permanent total disability, 2.5 lakh for permanent partial disability, and up to 25,000 rupees for accident-related hospitalisation.
The premium is 79.96 rupees per beneficiary, and the state's contribution of 21.35 lakh rupees ensures eligible fishermen pay nothing.
