AP Cabinet Discusses 34% Reservation for Backward Classes
The leaders of a state called Andhra Pradesh had a big meeting in their office building, the Secretariat.
They talked about giving more seats in local elections to people from groups called Backward Classes.
The Chief Minister, Chandrababu, was in charge of leading the meeting.
More than fifty different topics were on the table.
The most important topic was giving 34 out of every 100 seats to Backward Classes in local elections.
They want to give 33.50 out of 100 seats in city councils and 34.50 out of 100 seats in village councils.
A group of experts studied this and gave them a report, but the report alone does not reach the 34% goal.
So the leaders are thinking about other ways to reach their goal.
They also decided to hold direct elections for city councils.
After the meeting, they will write official rules, called a Government Order, to put the plan into action.
Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet met at the Secretariat under Chief Minister Chandrababu's chairmanship.
The primary agenda was implementing 34% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections.
The Cabinet meeting covered more than 55 agenda items.
A Government Order is expected with 33.50% BC reservation in local bodies and 34.50% in Panchayat Raj institutions.
The Cabinet is weighing alternative approaches because the commission's report alone would not achieve the 34% target.
