The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approved new rules for local elections.

Backward Classes will receive 34% of seats in rural local bodies and 33⅓% in urban local bodies.

The existing reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will not change.

The government wants to finish these elections by October.

It says this is important so local bodies do not lose ₹16,500 crore in funds.

Mayors and municipal chairpersons will again be chosen through direct elections.

The number of deputy mayors will be limited to one.

The Cabinet also approved more district-level local councils, jobs and education programs.
