India’s ITR Filings Reach Record 7.8 Crore for AY27
ITR filings cross 78 million for AY27, setting new record · livemint.com

India’s tax department said people and organizations filed more than 7.8 crore tax returns for AY 2026-27.

This was a new record for the department.

More than 5.9 crore simpler returns were filed by July 31.

August 31 was the deadline for people with certain business or professional income.

People who missed the deadline can still file a late return by December 31, 2026, or earlier if their assessment is completed.

They may have to pay a late fee.

Different forms are used by individuals, businesses, companies, trusts and other organizations.

The department said the rise in filings reflected stronger compliance and outreach.
