India Weighs Mandatory Cough Syrup Warnings for Young Children
India may put a large red warning on cough syrup bottles.
The warning would say children below four should not use the medicine.
Pictures of older children may also be added to the packaging.
The government is considering this after reports that babies were still given cough medicines.
An earlier advisory said these medicines should not be given to children below two.
It also said they were generally not recommended for children below five.
Officials are discussing whether to change the rules for medicine labels.
Concerns have also grown after reports connected contaminated syrups to children’s deaths in The Gambia and Uzbekistan.
India is considering a red warning label advising against cough syrup use in children below four.
The proposal also suggests pictorial images of school-age children to show the intended age group.
The move follows complaints that cough medicines continued to be given to infants despite a government advisory.
A 3 October 2025 advisory prohibited prescribing or dispensing these medicines to children below two and generally discouraged use below five.
