Pune Reports Sharp Rise in Suspected Dengue Cases
Pune has seen many more suspected dengue cases as the rainy season continued.
There were 484 suspected cases in August.
This was higher than the numbers recorded in June and July.
Tests confirmed 47 dengue cases between January and August.
The city also reported 21 chikungunya cases this year.
Aedes mosquitoes can grow in small amounts of standing water.
Rainwater in containers, tyres, flowerpots and coolers can become breeding places.
Health officials are removing these sites and asking residents to help.
People with lasting fever or other symptoms should see a doctor and avoid taking medicines without advice.
Pune reported 484 suspected dengue cases in August, up from 323 in July and 175 in June.
The city recorded 1,155 suspected dengue cases from January through August, including 47 confirmed by National Institute of Virology testing.
August alone accounted for about 42% of the year’s suspected dengue cases, with 21 NIV-positive cases reported that month.
Pune also recorded 21 chikungunya cases this year, amid intermittent rain, humidity and stagnant water.
The Pune Municipal Corporation identified 2,231 mosquito-breeding sites and urged residents to observe a weekly dry day.
