Nellore Central Prison Urged to Focus on Reform and Rehabilitation
Officials in Nellore said prison should help people change, not just punish them.
Judge Akireddy Narasimha Murthy said inmates can leave past mistakes behind and become responsible citizens.
He also referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that prisons should support rehabilitation.
Collector Himanshu Shukla said difficult circumstances can lead people to crime.
He praised items made by inmates and said the government planned to buy school benches from the prison.
He also asked officials to arrange training in plumbing, welding and electrical work.
The training could help inmates find jobs after release.
At the event, some inmates received certificates and prizes, while the jail superintendent requested better services for the prison.
