Mayawati Opposes SC, ST Creamy Layer, Criticises RSS' Casteist Mindset

A very important leader in India named Mayawati spoke on Sunday about how some groups of people are treated.

She leads a political party called the Bahujan Samaj Party, which works to help people who have been treated unfairly because of their caste.

A group called the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS for short, recently made remarks about caste-based reservation.

Reservation is a system that sets aside some seats in schools and jobs for people who need extra help.

The RSS's remarks started a debate about using a rule called the 'creamy layer' for the SC and ST communities.

The 'creamy layer' idea would help decide who is well-off enough not to need reservation benefits.

Mayawati said using the creamy layer for SC and ST communities goes against what the Constitution wanted reservation to do.

She accused the RSS of having a 'casteist mindset,' which means thinking some people are better than others because of their caste.

She said reservation is about social transformation, economic emancipation and self-respect.

She added that caste-based hatred and injustice have not ended, so the help is still needed.
