Hingoli Man With Severe Spine Deformity Walks Again After Surgery
A man from a city called Hingoli in India had a very curved spine that made it hard for him to walk and move.
He had a sickness called ankylosing spondylitis that made the bones in his back join together.
Because of this, his whole spine bent forward like a bow.
He had to leave his bank job because even simple daily tasks became too hard.
In 2025, he also needed surgery to replace his hip.
Doctors at JJ Hospital in Mumbai did a long operation to fix his back.
They carefully removed a small wedge of bone so his spine could straighten up.
Metal rods and screws now hold his spine in place.
After the surgery, he did exercises to gain strength, and now he can stand up straight and walk again.
The doctors said that finding and treating such illnesses early can prevent the need for such big surgeries.
Shivraj Mahadeo Javane, 32, of Hingoli regained the ability to stand upright and walk after complex corrective spine surgery at Sir JJ Group of Hospitals in Mumbai.
Javane developed persistent back pain in 2020 and was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in 2021, which gradually bent his spine forward into a bow-like posture.
The condition forced him to quit his bank job in 2022 and led to hip replacement surgery at a hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in 2025.
Led by Chief Spine Surgeon Dr Dhiraj Sonawane, the seven-to-eight-hour surgery on July 17 involved removing a nearly 45-degree wedge of bone from the lumbar spine and stabilising it with rods and screws.
Javane was discharged on July 23 after physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and was advised to avoid heavy lifting, do leg-strengthening exercises, and attend follow-ups.
Ankylosing spondylitis affects about one in two lakh people, while the severe kyphosis linked to it occurs in nearly one in four million.
